The best time for a boat tour on Lake Como is from May to late July and again in September... warm, settled weather, calm water in the morning, beautiful light, and far fewer crowds than August which is hottest and busiest; April and October are quieter and cheaper with gardens or autumn colour; November to March is the low season, when a private boat gives you the whole lake to yourself.
Below, every month is framed around what actually matters on the water — wind, light and crowds — not generic travel advice.
Lake Como boat season at a glance
Season | Weather | Water & light | Crowds | Verdict for a boat tour |
Apr | Mild, changeable | Calm mornings, gardens blooming | Low | Great value, soft light |
May–early Jun | Warm (18–24°C) | Calm, long golden light | Moderate | ★ Best overall |
Late Jun–Aug | Hot (28–32°C) | Clear, hazy midday | Very high | Book early morning or sunset |
Sep | Warm (20–26°C) | Calm, clear, glowing | Moderate | ★ Best overall (quieter) |
Oct | Cooler (14–20°C) | Crisp, autumn colour | Low | Beautiful and uncrowded |
Nov–Mar | Cold (3–10°C) | Often still, dramatic | Very low | The lake to yourself, lowest prices |

When is the water calmest?
On Lake Como the water is almost always calmest in the morning, before the afternoon breeze (the breva) picks up.
For glassy reflections and the smoothest ride, an early-morning cruise is unbeatable in any month. Late afternoon into sunset is the second-calmest window and the most photogenic.
The sunset timing most guides miss
Here is something the generic guides leave out: because Lake Como is hemmed in by steep mountains, the sun disappears behind the peaks roughly 45–60 minutes before the "official" sunset time. If you want golden light on the water and the villas, aim to be out about an hour and a half before official sunset — not at it.
Month | Approx. official sunset | Best on-water golden hour |
May | ~20:45 | ~19:15–20:00 |
July | ~21:00 | ~19:30–20:15 |
September | ~19:30 | ~18:00–18:45 |
October | ~18:30 | ~17:00–17:45 |
Times are approximate — we'll give you the exact golden-hour window for your date when you book a sunset tour.
Best months for proposals and photography

May–June and September–October are ideal for a marriage proposal by boat or a photoshoot: warm but not crowded, with the softest light and the calmest water. Midsummer works too, but go at sunrise or sunset to avoid the haze and the crowds at Bellagio and Varenna.
Is the low season worth it?
Underrated, yes. From November to March the lake is quiet, the air is clear, and the mountains are often dusted with snow — a completely different, dramatic kind of beauty. With a private, captained boat you don't depend on busy ferry timetables, and prices are at their lowest. Dress warmly and pick a still day, and a winter cruise can be the most memorable of all.
So, when should you book?
For the best all-round experience, choose May, early June or September, and book a morning or sunset slot. For the best price and solitude, come in the shoulder or low season. Whatever the month, a private tour lets you pick the calmest, most beautiful hour of the day — see our guide to tour costs to plan.
